At the minimum, carry a policy with $2,000,000 General Aggregate (Total Limit of policy) and a $1,000,000 per occurrence, even when it's not required by the venue. This goes for the smallest touring acts on up.You can also cover property and rented gear for reasonable costs but plan early and make it a priority to put it in the budget. Even if the venue doesn't ask you for proof of insurance, you are still responsible in the event of an unforeseen accident during your performance.
